What is zero knowledge encryption?Īs we discussed recently in our SpiderOak ONE review, a zero knowledge system is one where the cloud storage service knows nothing about your data. The country also is at the heart of the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes and various other international intelligence organizations.įortunately for everyone (United States data center users in particular) pCloud offers an optional zero knowledge encryption feature. Not to mention the United States is the home of the NSA and who knows how many other intelligence agencies. The USA has less privacy-friendly laws than the EU. This is much more secure than the US data center. You’ll want to use the European Union data center, which is located in Luxembourg. Fortunately, new users have the option to use either a European Union data center or the United States data center. Existing users are currently stuck with the US data center, unless they want to pay the fees to migrate their data to Europe. While pCloud is based in Switzerland, their original data center is in the United States. However, as we are about to see, there is a potential problem. Switzerland is a neutral country that is not part of any international intelligence organizations (as far as I know). The country also has stronger privacy and security laws than most nations. Founded in 2013, this small company (approximately 30 employees) says they have over 10.5 million users around the world.īeing based in Switzerland is good for the security of your data. PCloud AG (the publisher of pCloud) is a privately held company based in Baar, Switzerland.

Runs on Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android, iOS, and major browsers. Here is a quick summary of the features of pCloud: For now, what you need to know is that many of pCloud’s features will only work on unencrypted (insecure) data. That’s because pCloud allows for both encrypted and unencrypted data to appear in the same account. Talking about pCloud is a little different than talking about other cloud storage services we’ve reviewed.

Extra charge for pCloud Crypto and Extended File History (EFH).Not all features are available for encrypted data.Data may be stored in the United States. So, in conclusion, ice drive is cheaply priced and I would recommend it only if you plan to store small files and don't plan on backing up all of your phones pictures and videos in 1 big bunch to it but for me who stores large files and wishes to do that, I'm switching to another cloud storage company.
#Icedrive reviews zip file#
Icedrive is definitely one of the cheapest cloud storage options out there 1TB for 3.99 a month, however, it comes with a few annoyances, I didn't know when I uploaded a big folder (242GBs) of data to ice drive that when I tried to download the whole folder I got hit with "zip size exceeds plan quota" I never even knew I had a quota to zip file sizes, so I tried downloading the file through their portable app only to have many files to error and being left with a corrupted download in addition to it also running away with the amount of downloads at once I entered into the settings, I told it to do 2 downloads at once but 10 minutes later its doing 20 at a time and their virtual drive software downloading files is stuck using 10% of my available bandwidth so a download that should have taken max 30 minutes is apparently going to take 6 hours to complete, Something else I ran into was I wanted to back all of my pictures and videos up to ice drive from my iPhone however on their application only allows me to select individual pictures and videos and even worse started unselecting them when they scrolled off the screen.
